●Explore the Data and Power Tracker
This dataset compiles publicly available data about 73 Global Health Public-Private Partnerships. It reveals major disparities in who has access to decision-making in these partnerships.
Our Methodology
Explore the sections below to learn how data for this project was collected.
-
Global health public-private partnerships were included in the dataset if they met five criteria:
Explicit goal to promote health
Operations and/or mandate spans multiple international jurisdictions
Has a governing body that steers the direction of the partnership
The governing body has at least one public and one private sector member
Active/currently operational
-
Data collection began by creating a long list of 256 possible partnerships to vet for inclusion. These partnerships were identified from existing research, datasets, and knowledge of the global health field. After applying the inclusion criteria, 73 partnerships were left for the dataset. Data on multiple variables were then collected on each of these 73 partnerships.
-
The initial list of possible public-private partnerships was compiled between September 2023 and January 2024. Partnerships were vetted in early 2024 and then data were collected on the 73 included partnerships in June-July 2024.
-
Data were collected on three categories of variables for each partnership:
Scope: year founded, health issue, headquarter location, legal status, host organization (if applicable), and whether they call themselves a public-private partnership
Function
Decision-makers: total number of board members, number of board members by constituency type, total number of actors per sector (public, private, public-private), and the names, country, and region of each board member and observer
-
Board member representation is only one way to measure decision-making power in public-private partnerships. Other factors, like who funds the partnership, are not tracked by the dataset but also matter for decision-making influence.
This dataset captures global health public-private partnerships at a snapshot in time. Inevitably, board membership changes. To keep the dataset up-to-date, a second round of data collection is planned for mid-2026. Collaborators are welcome! Please reach out to the lead researcher if you would like to get involved.
